Smelting turns raw ore from Mining into metal bars at Craig's forge. Bars are used in crafting and tool upgrades, and they sell for more than the ore they are made from.
How smelting works
Every bar follows the same recipe: 5 units of an ore plus 1
Coal, for a gold fee. The stronger the metal, the higher the fee, and the deeper your friendship with Craig needs to be before he will teach you the recipe.
A bar's quality is the average quality of the ore and coal you put in. Smelt with Gold or Pristine materials to get a higher grade bar.
